The Historical Novel Society says about Smoke on the Wind: “The narrative is so vivid in its descriptions of the landscapes of today and yesterday that readers can almost see the switchbacks and steep incline of Devil’s Staircase or feel the burn of a broken foot blister. Readers also share the women’s deep emotions—regret over past wrongs and fears of an uncertain future…the journey is deeply moving as the women find their own way by helping one another.” – Historical Novels Society. As is clear to readers, my current obsession is Scotland and the Scottish Gaelic language. While writing Smoke on the Wind, I worried that I was overdoing it and readers would be either overwhelmed or bored by all that I was cramming into the story. In this article posted on She Writes, I talk about finding the right balance. Read the article HERE.

The Smoke on the Wind audiobook has two amazing narrators. The historical storyline (Sorcha’s story) is narrated by the talented Linda MacLeod. In Gaelic her name is Linda NicLeòid. Linda is from North Uist, although she’s now been living in Glasgow for just as many years. Gaelic was her first language, and she graduated from the University of Glasgow many years ago with an MA honours degree in Gaelic & then an MPhil in Gaelic too. Today Linda works part-time as a presenter on CBeebies ALBA and the rest of her freelance work is divided between different Gaelic projects. On a personal note, I got the honor of meeting Linda at Fèis Seattle 2024. She is such a delight and I know you’ll love her voice. You can learn more about her on her YouTube page here or on her Instagram page here.
